Learning concrete, then building in Key West

  • Learned on my father's jobs

I learned concrete from my father, working his jobs on weekends and summers until I could set forms and finish a slab on my own. The lesson that stayed with me is that the parts nobody sees once the concrete is in, like the base, the steel and the joints, decide whether your slab holds up.

I started Key West Concrete Company here in 2023 with that in mind. Checking the numbers twice and writing things down keeps surprises out of a job, for us and for you, so that's how I've run things from the first estimate on.

  • How we work today

Most of our calls come from homeowners and property owners on the island planning driveways, patios, walks, floors and foundation work. I still come out to look at each job myself, because the person pricing your slab should be the one standing beside it on pour day.

Our crew of form setters and finishers does the work with me. We're known for careful layout and clean, square work, and that comes from measuring twice and keeping the forms true before a single truck shows up.

What we hold to on every slab

These are the habits behind our work, the things I check on your job long before anyone talks about the finish.

  • A written scope first

I measure your job on site and write up the whole scope with the price, so you know exactly what's being built before any concrete arrives.

  • Base before finish

The subgrade, the ground your slab sits on, gets dug out and packed instead of raked level, because a loose base settles and takes your slab with it.

  • Joints cut on time

We cut control joints, planned grooves that give a slab a straight place to crack, while the timing is right, so cracks usually follow those lines instead of wandering across your patio.

  • Licensing you can check

We're fully licensed and insured, and since the City of Key West asks most contractors for a State of Florida license, ask any contractor you're weighing to show theirs.

How we treat every job

  • Questions before answers

I ask plenty of questions before I give you an answer, about how you use the space, what's parked on it and where the water goes now.

  • City or county first

Some addresses that read Key West fall under the county, so we check which office covers yours before we talk about permits or dates.

  • Permits handled for you

The city usually wants a permit for work valued over $1,000, materials and labor included, so we handle that paperwork with its Building Department when your job calls for one.

  • Historic review planned

In the Historic District, outside work needs historic review approval, and it comes before any permit, so we plan for that step before we set a pour date.

  • Water planned for

We check where the water runs before we set forms, so your new slab sheds water away from the house instead of pooling against it.

  • Fully licensed and insured.
  • Free estimates at your property.
